Geographical Features
Puerto Rico, an archipelago, is surrounded by
a number of smaller islands, the largest of which are Vieques, Culebra, and Mona. Puerto Rico enjoys a tropical climate due
to its location and as a result, is contemplated by many beautiful geographical
features. The Northern part of Puerto Rico includes San Juan, Carolina,
Arecibo, Barceloneta, Camuy, Manati, Hatillo, Quebradilla, Vega Alta, Vega Baja,
Bayamon, Caguas, Cataño, Dorado, Guaynabo, Toa Baja, Toa Alta, and Trujillo
Alto. They are located in what is known as “Llano Costanero del Norte” or
Northern Karst. The formation of the Northern Karst is due to the building up of
limestone that, over the years, has formed the greatly known depressions,
sinkholes,“mogotes”,and caves. Although being an area of sinkholes, the Northern
Karst’s has a numerous amount of precious rivers, natural resources, and must
see sites. In fact, the Northern Karst holds the greatest supply of
underground water in P.R. that serves as the initial point for most rivers. The
main rivers located in the Northern Karst are Rio Grande de Arecibo, Rio de
Guajataca, Rio Camuy, Rio Grande de Manatí, Rio Grande de Loiza (deepest), and
Rio de la Plata (longest). So, as you can see the Northern Karst’s are
characterized by various natural geographical features that make it a must see
site of Puerto Rico,“Isla Del Encanto”.
